Falcons Narrow Defeat to Exeter

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

On Sunday 12th March, Newcastle Falcons faced Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park. Exeter hadn’t been beaten at Sandy Park all season. However, Newcastle Falcons had beaten them at home in their remarkable season that they are having.

It was 17-7 to the Falcons at half time thanks to tries from Cooper and Hammersley.

But Exeter fought back with a try for Simmonds and a penalty from Simmonds again left the score 17-17. There was late drama as Simmonds converted a penalty in the dying seconds to give Exeter the win. They now face Bath in the final after they won against struggling Northampton 13-12.

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

This season, our Year 8 Chantry netball team are speeding ahead in the ranks, winning lots of matches as the league closes to an end. We still have two more matches against Cramlington Learning Village and NCEA but, of course, we hope to take victory!

Richard Coates Ashington Whytrig Seaton Sluice Bene Biscuits Bede Academy Mededale Newminster NCEA Cramlington
Chantry 6-3! 21-5! 19-4! 15-3! 18-0! 16-2! 20-3! 5-6 – –

Our team has proved to be strong as we have only lost one match with two left to go. We are all playing well and have vital parts in the team. We have strengthened our friendships and continue to improve our skills to make our gameplay better! The opposing teams have been tough competitors however, we have worked well as a team and are winning! We all communicate and work well together which are key factors for a successful team. We all hope to continue playing netball after we leave Chantry!

We spoke to our coach and PE teacher Miss Scott and asked her a few question about her time with the amazing Chantry netball team. Miss Scott has just joined Chantry at Christmas and she has already proved to be an amazing coach!

Here are some questions we asked her:

Q) What have you enjoyed the most in your time with the netball team?

A) Getting to know the players and the teams friendship when you support one another with general enthusiasm!

Q) What has it been like to coach the team?

A) You were a very experienced team and its has been a joy to see you play together!

Q) Was it hard taking over the netball team after our previous coach/ teacher left?

A) Yes, because I knew how passionate Mrs Grundy was about netball and the Chantry team!

Q) Did you play for your school netball team?

A) I did, however, it wasn’t my main sport.

Q) What has been your favourite match so far?

A) The first match you played, against Benet Biscops, because it was nice to see the team work together!

Q) What has been your highlight of the matches you’ve seen?

A) To see how you work as a team to see you all support on another and how you lead yourself as a team! I enjoyed seeing the team spirit that you have!

Q) When you first arrived at Chantry, what did you expect our team to play like?

A) I expected you to be a good team from seeing all the twitter posts about you. I knew that Mrs Grundy had coached you well!

Chemical attack on British soil – Russian spies?

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Two days ago a military grade nerve agent was released in the quiet town of Salisbury. Luckily there were no deaths  but two victims are still in hospital in a critical condition: a former Russian spy and his daughter.

Relatives say that the daughter was the real target.

Because of this attack, the UK might be pulling out of the World Cup, which is being held in Russia.  So far there is very little evidence that Russia is responsible.

Now the area of the attack is covered with teams in hazmat suits  trying to make sure it is safe.

Science Stars Sparkle

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

On Friday 9th of March, students at Chantry Middle School celebrated Science Week; here’s a little overview of what they got up to:

Year 5

The Year 5s went to the Centre for Life; they went into the Dino Jaws exhibition and also experienced the 4D motion ride. When they were on the 4D motion ride they got given 3D glasses and they got sprayed with water and drizzled with fake snow. This ride makes you feel like you are actually there. They got to go in the Curiosity Zone and also they did some science experiments, and watched a live theatre show all about science. It was a fantastic experience for all involved!

Year 6

The Year 6s stayed at school to do some exciting workshops. Technology Tom came in to see all Year 6s across Chantry and Newminster. He did fun experiments what included the audience and teachers. In one of the sessions, they designed bags out of vinyl and a heat press. Last year, marianne biologists came in but this year they had a creepy crawly workshop with snakes and tarantulas for students to hold. They had lots of fun, with lots of laughs.

Year 7

The Year 7s went to Newcastle University to experience what it is like. Most of their workshops were to do with engineering; they went on a tour of the campus. I think the teachers favourite building  was the library because it was so quiet; the library has three floors to do with how quiet you have to be. On one of the floors was a cafe that sold delicious paninis. We did a workshop on archeology from WWI which was very interesting.

Year 8

The Year 8s stayed at school. They did fingerprint workshops and detective workshops. They did a electromagnetics workshop as well- so everyone got to experience something different!

Jamie Carragher spits on a 14 year old girl after the Man United Liverpool match!

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Jamie Carragher apologises again about the “awful” spitting incident on Saturday after Liverpool lost 2-1 against their long time rivals, Man United.

Jamie Carragher was videoed spitting at a car window from which a football fan was taunting him while driving away from Old Trafford. The man’s 14 year old daughter says she was hit in the face by the spit.

Afterwards, Carragher, who had been covering the match for Sky Sports, phoned the family to apologise.

Now Liverpool’s ambassador, Jamie Carragher has been dropped by Sky Sports so you won’t be hearing his calls for rest of the season.

I think that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable. Jamie Carragher is one of the greatest England captains of all time, making 69 appearances for his country and is a role model for thousands of young people like me. He should think about his actions.

  3. ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, the fourth Harry Potter book, was a record breaker! They sold one million of the first pint copies in the UK alone!!
  4. JK Rowling also wrote two small Volumes that appear in Harry Potter’s school book title with in her novels.
  5. On the 21st of June 2003, the fifth book (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) was published in Britain, Canada, USA and Australia.

Ireland Smash Scotland to Steal the Six Nations

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

On Saturday 11th March, Ireland beat Scotland 28-10 at the Aviva Stadium.

Scotland took an early lead through a penalty converted by Laidlaw. But the score soon changed when Jacob Stockdale intercepted a sloppy pass by Laidlaw and broke through to score a try under the posts. It wasn’t the first time Laidlaw had been punished for his sloppy passing.

Stockdale scored a second try on the stroke on half time, making the score 14-3 to Ireland.

After half time, Scotland made some very good chances but couldn’t finish their moves off. Scotland were punished when two tries were scored by Conor Murray and Sean Conrin secured the bonus point for Ireland. Scotland did get a consolation try after one of their moves finally was finished brilliantly by Kinghorn.

This left England a mountain to climb because they needed a bonus point against france if they had any chance of winning the Six Nations. England lost to France 16-22 and gifted Ireland the Six Nations. This poses the question: Can Ireland keep this form up to the world cup next year or will England bounce back from this shocking Six Nations?

Chantry Ski Trip

15th March 2018Mrs K Shutler

Some Year 8s are currently in France on the Ski Trip! They left on the 10th March, heading to Newcastle Airport for an early start.

The first session was on Sunday morning. They had a successful lesson and then went back to the hotel for lunch before spending the afternoon on the slopes.

The next day, they woke up to a very snowy morning. They had good fun in the morning and in the afternoon the snow stopped and conditions were much better. After a tiring but fun session, they had games to look forward to!

On March 13th, two students were nominated to wear bat helmets for the day; they were Nathan and Kelsey and they wore them on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, they had great fun bum boarding which means sliding down the slopes without any skis!

On Wednesday morning, the weather cleared up and looked much better than earlier in the week. They had a great day on the slopes, making the most of the sun and the ski lifts were very busy with excited skiers.

After a great day of skiing in the sun, they had a fun karaoke night in the hotel!
