Year 7 students really enjoyed their visit to one of Newcastle’s most important and exciting historic buildings!
They searched ancient passageways and chambers where Kings walked and villains were imprisoned.
New exhibits allowed our students to experience what life would’ve been like in these two astonishingly preserved medieval buildings.
Year 7 got their creative juices flowing in DLE during a workshop with local poet Matt Miller.
Pupils produced a class poem together about what makes them happy and then did some free-writing where they just let the pen go wherever their minds took them. They finished off with a performance session and learnt how to project their voices when delivering something to an audience.
Matt was very complimentary about our pupils. “Working with two separate groups of year 7 pupils at Chantry Middle School last Friday was a joy. In the time I had with each group, it was clear to see that there were inspiring levels of confidence, talent and willingness to share amongst the students, with some highly imaginative writing produced in a short space of time.”
Year 7 students have been learning more about careers in the STEM sector, by visiting local pharmaceutical company Piramal Healthcare.During their afternoon visit, the students received an introductory talk about the company before visiting the Quality Control labs, trying their hand at paper chromatography and seeing how an electron microscope works.Speaking after the visit, Glen in 7C said: “It was good because you learnt about why medicines were made the way they were. We also saw some of the different equipment used by the scientists there.”

Our 5th Annual Mini Lit Quiz will be held at Chantry on the afternoon of Friday June 26 finishing at 4pm. This literary competition gives children who’ve always loved to read a chance to display their knowledge and win prizes for it!
Topics will be very wide-ranging and teams can expect questions on every type of fiction, including comic strips, picture books and the classics as well as current popular novels. Â There will be a Pictionary round and, as knowledge is acquired from reading, there may be a little general knowledge thrown in as well!
Since the start of the year, twenty-one Year 7 students have been working towards the British Science Association’s Bronze CREST Award in special after-school sessions.
On 22 March, we hosted a special showcase event, for students to present their completed projects and discuss ideas with professional scientists and engineers.
The standard of work was very high and we’re pleased to confirm that all of the students’ project work has been selected for exhibition at the regional Big Bang Science Fair in July.
Well done to all of the students involved and a big thank you to everyone who supported the event.
Key Stage 3 had a visit from Pegswood Fire Station’s Swift Rescue Team last week.
They were given a talk about being safe next to water and what to do if a person should get into difficulty.
The students were then taken outside and had the chance to look around their vehicle and see the equipment.
 Congratulations to Grace Tomlin, Ethan Monaghan, Josh Williams and Elliot Tolman in Year 7 who were the four winners of the French Spelling Bee Round Two.
These pupils successfully spelt the most French words – using the French alphabet – from a list of 100 in one minute.
They will move onto the regional heat of the competition at Newcastle University in April where they will face competitors from schools all over the North-East.
In previous years, we have had pupils from Chantry make it through to the Nationals in Cambridge so fingers crossed we can repeat that success.

Year 7 pupils had a fantastic experience this week due to a very special visitor who flew all the way from Shanghai to work with them.
Mr Zhou Wenfu is an artist who set up a school in Shanghai 30 years ago called ‘The Shanghai Modern Children’s Imagination Art Centre’.
He brought with him examples of Chinese student’s artwork to help inspire the pupils. The afternoon was spent looking at the artwork and responding to it.
The pupils were delighted with the activity and also with the flags and postcards that they got to take home with them. Some also got their names written in Chinese calligraphy.

Chantry Y7 & Y8 girls qualified from the area competitions for the Sainsbury’s School Games Sportshall Athletics Finals which were held at Morpeth Riverside Leisure Center on Friday 6th February 2015.
Chantry won both the Y7 and Y8 girls competitions to become country champions!
Well done to everyone involved.
On Thursday evening, sixteen very excited students from Chantry, Newminster and The King Edward VI, who’ve been studying six specially selected books since October, were rewarded by meeting the authors at last and getting their books signed.
These students have been shadowing the North East Teen Book Awards and were attending the awards ceremony at The Centre for Life in Newcastle.
