Newcastle Black Gate and Castle Keep

7th July 2015Mrs K Shutler

Castle keepYear 7 students really enjoyed their visit to one of Newcastle’s most important and exciting historic buildings!

They searched ancient passageways and chambers where Kings walked and villains were imprisoned.

New exhibits allowed our students to experience what life would’ve been like in these two astonishingly preserved medieval buildings.

Visit to BBC Newcastle

25th June 2015Mrs K Shutler

Lights! Camera! Action! Some of our Year 8 pupils took a trip to BBC Newcastle for a tour this week.

They saw how both the TV and radio studios work and put the theory into practise. The team performed a radio play with half taking on the roles of actors and the other half operating the sound effects.

The highlight of the day was being in the TV studio where BBC Look North is filmed.  Each group had prepared a weather forecast and followed local weatherman Paul Mooney’s top tips for a successful broadcast.  Oh, and just to make it extra challenging, they performed their forecasts in French!  Bravo les enfants!

A big thank you to Dr Paul Nott and his colleagues at Piramal for hosting our visit.

The visit began with a look around the new Visitors Centre, which included a range of hands on electricity-related activities for the students to take part in. This was followed by an introductory presentation about the history of the site and how electricity was generated there.

Photography Trip to Beamish

26th March 2015Mrs K Shutler

IMG_1506Pupils from Newminster and Chantry reflected upon what they had learnt on their Photography trip to Beamish.

“We enjoyed dressing up in clothing from the 19th Century and and taking part in many fun activities…comparing old photos from the 1900s, taking part in the real life history and taking photos of each other in different locations.

We were amazed to see the variety of photos that were taken in the past – cricketers, miners, elderly couples, soldiers, business men and families. Pin hole cameras were massive and really hard to carry around with you.

The pictures came out in black and white and you had to stay still for a few minutes before the picture was taken which made it hard to smile. In the past it cost a lot of money but now you just press a button without costing anything. Ipad cameras only take a few seconds to take the photo!”
