Google Apps for Education and Real Smart

1st May 2015J Edwards

The Learning Trust has been rolling google docsout access to Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Sites and Gmail and to students from all year groups. Access to Google Apps for Education is administered through Real Smart. Real Smart and Google Apps can be accessed from any device that has an internet connection and has modern web browser. Students can login using a desktop PC, laptop, tablet or a smart phone allowing us to bridge the gap between home and school.

5B_googleStudent Gmail accounts are limited to the two middle schools within the Learning Trust. Students cannot send or receive emails from King Edward VI students or staff and can’t send or receive emails from any external account outside of the Learning Trust.

Access to Google Drive will enable access to Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides and will reduce the reliance on Microsoft Office for word-processed documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Real Smart combined with Google Apps for Education enables a group of students to work collaboratively on the same Google Doc, Google Sheet or Google Slide presentation at the same time.

Google Classroom gives the teachers the ability to electronically create,RealSmart assign, and collect student classwork and homework. Teachers can seamlessly integrate Google Docs, Google Drive, and Gmail to create tasks and provide feedback to their students directly. Students can work on assignments in Google Docs and hand their work in with just a few clicks.

Students are currently being introduced to the new system in their Computer Science lessons and are learning about acceptable use and e-safety.

Safer Internet Day 2015

5th February 2015J Edwards

safePolice Community Support Officer (PCSO) Matt Leonard and PCSO Simon Beavers have been into school to deliver an e-safety assembly as part of Safer Internet Day. Year 5 & 6 had their assembly on Wednesday the 4th of February and the Officers are coming back on the Tuesday 10th of February to deliver another assembly that is more age appropriate for our older students.

Safer Internet Day gets hundreds of organisations involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policy makers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet. Ultimately, a better internet is up to us!

Personal Safety talk for Year 6

1st December 2014J Edwards

Dave Burn came to Chantry on Monday 1st of December to do a ā€˜Personal Safety and Staying Safe on the Streets’ workshop with Year 6. The workshop educated our students about various aspects of personal safety ranging from mobile phones to internet. Dave also discussed student safety whilst out in the community with their friends.DaveBurnsDec2014

Dave Burn is a ā€˜Be Safe’ trainer. ā€˜Be Safe’ works in partnership with the Home Office to provide workshops in schools and colleges where they can access young people. The workshops form part of a five year national strategy which aims to reduce the number of young people that are placing themselves in dangerous situations whilst out in the community.

ā€œSince Dave came in, I have a better understanding of how to stay safe. I enjoyed the short video clips because they get serious points across well. I learned that it is important to help your friends stay safe as well.ā€Ā Luke Hodgson 6N
