Show Racism the Red Card

6th March 2015Mrs K Shutler

DSCF6579Richard Offiong, Trevor Benjamin and Justine King from “Show Racism the Red Card” joined Year 5 on Thursday.

The children enjoyed workshops and fitness sessions based around the theme of anti-racism.

One student said, “It was fantastic.  It gave us the opportunity to ask lots of questions without worrying.  I now have more of an idea of what is acceptable and what isn’t.  We also talked a bit about challenging racist behaviour and attitudes.  It was nice meeting people who played football professionally too”.

The children all took home a signed magazine or poster and were over the moon with their gift.

World Book Day

6th March 2015Mrs K Shutler

Congratulations to all those pupils who dressed as a character from fiction for World Book Day.

Year 6 were particularly impressive, mainly as characters from The Hobbit, but my personal favourite was Amy Roberts in year 7, who dressed up as Audrey Parton from The Machine Gunners – no doubt quite a few of our parents will have read that book when they were at school!

Spelling Bee Round 2

3rd March 2015Mrs K Shutler

Congratulations to Grace Tomlin, Ethan Monaghan, Josh Williams and Elliot Tolman in Year 7 who were the four winners of the French Spelling Bee Round Two.

These pupils successfully spelt the most French words – using the French alphabet – from a list of 100 in one minute.

They will move onto the regional heat of the competition at Newcastle University in April where they will face competitors from schools all over the North-East.

In previous years, we have had pupils from Chantry make it through to the Nationals in Cambridge so fingers crossed we can repeat that success.

Well done to all our competitors who took part before half-term.

7W & 7S Enterprise

27th February 2015J Edwards

7S and 7W took part in an enterprise workshop on Friday morning. Students had the opportunity to work with Carole Richards, Business Ambassador for Northumberland County Council. The students also worked with six other Business Ambassadors that volunteered to take part in the session.

We were delighted to find out that two of the Ambassadors were parents of students that currently go to Chantry Middle School; Mr Crumplin from BRIC and Mrs Cuthbertson from Proctor & Gamble (P&G). The other four Business Ambassadors were both from NCC, Sainsbury’s, Active Northumberland and Tyne Met College.

Students found out about the skills and attributes of a variety of roles within a company and calculated the profit for their group using their own records of expenditure and revenue of their own company. The students quickly realised the need for quality control in terms of their production and developed their negotiating skills when buying and selling stock.

Well done to “Duck N Stool Ducks” from 7W that were the overall winners. Members of the winning team were:7W enterprise winners

British Science Week 2015

26th February 2015J Edwards

CMS BSW 2015 2We are really looking forward to all of the events that we have planned for British Science Week 2015.

The majority of the events for this year take place on Friday the 13th of March but with so much to pack into just one day, we have had to include some satellite events that fall either side of our big day.

Many thanks to all of the parents that have provided us with links for site visits or have offered to come in themselves to deliver a session on Friday the 13th.

Please check the newsletter and school website to see how all of the events for every year group went.

Please get in touch with Miss Edwards if you are available to help on the Alnwick Garden or Komatsu visit with year 7 or Great North Museum visit with year 5.

Special Visitor for Year 7

26th February 2015Mrs K Shutler

IMG_0463Year 7 pupils had a fantastic experience this week due to a very special visitor who flew all the way from Shanghai to work with them.

Mr Zhou Wenfu is an artist who set up a school in Shanghai 30 years ago called ‘The Shanghai Modern Children’s Imagination Art Centre’.

He brought with him examples of Chinese student’s artwork to help inspire the pupils. The afternoon was spent looking at the artwork and responding to it.

The pupils were delighted with the activity and also with the flags and postcards that they got to take home with them. Some also got their names written in Chinese calligraphy.

Thank you to Miss Said who organised this special treat.
