Trout Ticklers Update from Andrew Jackson

By Mrs K Shutler15th May 2015

Next session at Higham Lake on 14 June from 8am – 4pm.

Well the first Trout Ticklers event is in the bag with a slightly disappointing turnout of 3 parents and 3 children from Chantry. Up until the day we were expecting seven parents and nine kids which would have made the day more worthwhile. I did receive a couple of last minute cry offs as children were still tired from Hawkhirst and others had SATS coming up.

However they do say it’s quality and not quantity that counts so it was great to see Josh Wade, Chloe Holmes and Joseph Jackson, all from year 5, braving the wind and rain to visit Fontburn Reservoir on a none too pleasant Sunday morning. Their enthusiasm soon countered the weather conditions and I am thrilled to announce that not only did Chloe Holmes catch her very first fish, but it was also the heaviest of the day at a whisker under 2lb, so well done Chloe. I was stood next to her, with her dad Phil and watching Chloe learn to cast was a really pleasure, I expect the Trout Ticklers have picked up their next life member!

French Spelling Bee Third Round

6th May 2015J Edwards

spell_beeYear 7 French pupils – Ethan Monaghan, Elliot Tolman, Grace Tomlin and Josh Williams –  went to Newcastle University last week to take part in the third round of the French Spelling Bee.

Unfortunately the team didn’t make it through to the national finals but they all did amazingly, spelling both confidently and accurately. Grace and Ethan took part in one of the nail biting tiebreakers to try and earn a place in one of the day’s semi-final heats.  “The Spelling Bee was a really fun experience and I especially enjoyed competing against other schools.  I was really happy I made it through to a tiebreaker as I became more confident with each round.” Grace Tomlin.

Google Apps for Education and Real Smart

1st May 2015J Edwards

The Learning Trust has been rolling google docsout access to Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Sites and Gmail and to students from all year groups. Access to Google Apps for Education is administered through Real Smart. Real Smart and Google Apps can be accessed from any device that has an internet connection and has modern web browser. Students can login using a desktop PC, laptop, tablet or a smart phone allowing us to bridge the gap between home and school.

5B_googleStudent Gmail accounts are limited to the two middle schools within the Learning Trust. Students cannot send or receive emails from King Edward VI students or staff and can’t send or receive emails from any external account outside of the Learning Trust.

Access to Google Drive will enable access to Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides and will reduce the reliance on Microsoft Office for word-processed documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Real Smart combined with Google Apps for Education enables a group of students to work collaboratively on the same Google Doc, Google Sheet or Google Slide presentation at the same time.

Google Classroom gives the teachers the ability to electronically create,RealSmart assign, and collect student classwork and homework. Teachers can seamlessly integrate Google Docs, Google Drive, and Gmail to create tasks and provide feedback to their students directly. Students can work on assignments in Google Docs and hand their work in with just a few clicks.

Students are currently being introduced to the new system in their Computer Science lessons and are learning about acceptable use and e-safety.
