Parents Evening Bookings for Year 5

25th September 2015J Edwards

pes-logo_2The school has introduced a new intuitive and easy to use online appointment booking system. This allows you to choose your own appointment time with your child’s form teacher and you will receive an email confirming your appointment. We are confident this will be an improvement to the previous system and welcome any feedback. As we are implementing the same system across all three schools in the Learning Trust, parents with children at King Edward VI High School may have already used the system for making appointments before.

We have contacted the parents of students in Year 5 to let them know that we are having a Parents Evening on Wednesday the 7th of October and online booking opens at 7.00am on Monday the 28th of September. The link for making bookings is below:

Show Racism The Red Card

23rd September 2015J Edwards

Showtina Racism the Red Card, the UK’s anti-racism charity, was in school working with Y5. They promoted a message of understanding by using the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. All four classes took part in a range of workshops that aimed to:

  • Educate young people about the causes and consequences of racism and to explore the various forms racism can take.
  • Empower young people to challenge racism in the communities in which they live, providing them with relevant knowledge and information to enable them to do this.
  • Help young people prepare to play an active role as citizens in an increasingly multi-cultural society.
  • Enable young people to develop good relationships and respect the differences between people, regardless of their ethnicity, faith, culture or nationality.

Niamh & Chloe from 5I really enjoyed the ‘True or False’ activity and appreciated the opportunity to ask questions in a safe environment.

Chantry Fun Run

22nd September 2015J Edwards

funrunFriday saw The Chantry Fun Run take place. The event is one that pupils always look forward to.

The theme this year was ‘Celebrating England’. The weather held well and the students smiled from start to finish and behaved impeccably as they made their way round with friends.

As usual our students showed their fantastic creativity but turning out as knights, The Royal Family, Prime Ministers, Footballers, Rugby Players, Suffragettes and The British Bake Off team to name but a few!

The event was well supported by families and supporters. Awards were given to two members of each class and selected by Mr Ord and Mayor Byard (a very hard job as it turned out!). Mayor Byard then kindly handed out the prizes at the end.

Some of the money raised will go towards the Air Ambulance. Thanks to all staff for their help and for all the kind and generous donations made by supporters. Finally and most importantly well done to all the students who took part.

Year 6 Visit St Mary’s Lighthouse

18th September 2015L Dickinson
Adaptations St Marys Lighthouse Sept 2015Year 6 Chantry students recently took part in a Science field trip to St Mary’s Lighthouse. The visit was intended to support the work children are currently doing in class about habitats and adaptations.

Working in class groups, the children spent half the day exploring the rock pools and collecting creatures to observe and discuss in more detail during a touch session. The second half of the day was spent climbing the lighthouse tower, learning about its history and considering the formation of different coastal features.

We are grateful to parent Mrs Fish, for coming along to help with 6C/W’s visit to the lighthouse.

GSUS visits Chantry

16th September 2015L Dickinson

We were lucky enough to have the GSUS bus onsite week commencing 14th September. The bus is actually an interactive classroom with 32 computers hidden in the desks. The lesson gave students the chance to help one of the fictional characters and consider one of the three themes: Fear, Forgiveness, Rejection.

Through a selection of multi-media the students were able to listen to music, watch video clips, read about famous people and use the information to help them respond to the character through email.

The aim being that they see how Jesus’ teachings are still relevant today. Students reported that it was “ace” and “it makes you think about those who are having a tough time and how we should be helping them”.

GSus busLessons will be followed up in assemblies over the coming weeks. If you want to find out more about the “GSUS bus” go to http://www.gsuslive.co.uk.

Our thanks go to the members of the Mustard Tree
Trust who facilitated the experience for us.

Year 5 Travel Workshops

15th September 2015L Dickinson

Year 5 spent yesterday afternoon learning about personal safety as they travel to and from school.

Activities included identifying their route to school, assessing the safety of crossing points in Morpeth, cycle safety and behaviour on buses.

The journey to and from school always causes much anxiety for our new students and their parents; therefore these workshops were very timely in helping the children to ensure that their journeys are safe.

The final part of the afternoon was spent designing their own high-vis gear to help them get noticed!
