Allons au Cinéma

26th January 2016L Dickinson

tomboySome of our Year 8 linguists took a trip to the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle for a French film day this week.  The movie was 2011’s Tomboy which deals with some thought-provoking issues.

“It was a great experience to see a foreign film on the big screen and it helped improve my French vocabulary.”  Lauren Cummings

“The film tackled a very challenging subject of a girl pretending to be a boy.  The scenario was really well thought out and the use of mirrors in different scenes highlighted how the main character’s appearance was something which tormented her.”  Jacob Russan-Pritchett

“I learnt a few new bits of vocab which will come in useful.  The whole concept was unusual and different and you didn’t know what was coming next.”  Oli Herford

“I really enjoyed it and thought it was rather heart-warming.  I think it is important to highlight issues which can affect us, particularly at our age, and we shouldn’t shy away from such topics.  The workshops after the film were challenging in terms of the French language we used.  I would recommend this film to anyone who likes movies and … French!”  Grace Coffey

“This was my first foreign film so I enjoyed the whole experience. “  Stephanie Shek

“The film was very interesting and I understood quite a lot of what was going on without having to read the subtitles.  Although it wasn’t my type of film, the subject matter was eye-opening and I really enjoyed it.”  Rebekah Hudson

“I really liked seeing a foreign film and it was a great chance to learn some new French.  The subject matter was gripping and left me with lots questions at the end.”  Megan Bell

Y5 & 6 Boys football team

26th January 2016J Edwards

footballThe year 5 and 6 boys football team travelled to the Northumberland CSFA 7-a-side finals at Newcastle University’s 3G pitch at Longbenton with the aim of winning to go through to the North of England Finals. Incredibly they managed to do so, managing to hold their nerve through two penalty shootouts on their way to victory. This is a fantastic achievement and the first time that cup has landed in the Chantry trophy cabinet – although the girls of 2008 were also county champions. The boys now look forward to the North of England finals later in the year.

25th January 2016L Dickinson
A huge thank you to David Bittlestone, Culinary Programmes Manager for Compass Group, who came into school to mentor Ella Riches ahead of her representing Newcastle and Northumberland at the Regional Final of Future Chef 2016.

David thought the dishes Ella made for the last stage of the competition were so good, they just needed to be tweaked and refined.
Although Ella’s recipes will remain a closely guarded secret until after the competition, here is a sneak preview of her dishes!

Frankie Fundraiser

19th January 2016L Dickinson

IMG_2378Last week many of our children took part in a fundraising event to help raise money for Frankie Sherwood, a 2 year old boy who suffers with cancer. Frankie is the mascot for Newcastle United Ladies Team.

Players from Newcastle United Ladies Team spent the morning playing football with groups of children from both Chantry and Newminster. Frankie joined in with various groups and enjoyed a kick around with players and children. Many of our children and the adults involved said how much they’d enjoyed the session and being able to meet Frankie. Voluntary donations were very generous and will be put to good use.

Newcastle United players and development manager were very impressed with the attitudes of all children and their level of skill.

Poppy Pritchard (Year 5) was spotted by Newcastle’s development manager and will be asked to attend Newcastle academy. Well done Poppy! A fantastic achievement.

Well done to all children who participated and a very big Thank you to NUWFC for a brilliant morning.
