In celebration of World Book Day, teachers from Chantry tell us about their favourite books.
If pupils would like to audition for a place in the Summer Showcase Variety Performance then they need to add their act name, names of participants and classes to the audition lists which are up around school. They have until close of school on 11th March to sign up. An audition timetable will then be made and auditions will be held the week before the Easter holidays.
There is a list outside the music room at Chantry and in the Music block at Newminster and there are also others around school.
On Friday 26th, Eve Massey, Taira Ford, Shannon Gladstone and Eloise Lynn put on a big bake sale to raise money for Parkinson ’s disease and Cancer Research UK. This went really successfully and they raised a massive total of £69.10! They sold out within 5 minutes. The girls did the bake sale in order to get their care and co-operation certificates for their jigsaws.
Félicitations to Jac Caygill, Ailidh Dick and Finley Camille in Year 7 who were the four winners of the French Spelling Bee Round Two.
These pupils successfully spelt the most French words – using the French alphabet – from a list of 100 in one minute. They move onto the regional heat of the competition at Newcastle University in April where they will face competitors from schools all over the North-East.
In previous years, we have had pupils from Chantry make it through to the Nationals in Cambridge so fingers crossed we can repeat that success.
Ailidh set another school record by spelling an amazing 15 words correctly. Bravo to her and all of our competitors who took part this year.
Chantry U13 Netball team played in their first netball league match of this season away against St Benet Biscops on Wednesday 24th February.
Chantry girls played really well winning 19-2.
Our Y7 girls also played in a friendly match and won 4-2.
7S and 7H took part in an enterprise workshop on Friday morning. Students had the opportunity to work with Carole Richards, Business Ambassador for Northumberland County Council. The students also worked with two other Business Ambassadors that volunteered to take part in the session. Debra Phillips from Galliford Try has supported enterprise sessions at Chantry before and hopes to work with us to give some students the opportunity to visit the construction site where Galliford Try are currently building new homes in Morpeth. Thanks also to Tony Kirsop who manages Social Enterprise Northumberland.
Students found out about the skills and attributes of a variety of roles within a company and calculated the profit for their group using their own records of expenditure and revenue of their own company. The students quickly realised the need for quality control in terms of their production and developed their negotiating skills when buying and selling stock.
Well done to “Bombay Ducks” that were the overall winners. Members of the winning team were:
- Grace Fyall (7H)
- Billy Rowe (7S)
- Scarlett Robertson (7S)
- Lewis Halliday (7S)
- David Lowes (7S)
- Emma Sykes (7S)

The Year 8 boys played for the Cheviot rugby team on Thursday 11th February in the County Cup Semi Final. The game was away to Dame Allans who the team had narrowly lost to earlier in the year. Finally seeing a little bit of sunshine the players were hoping for some running rugby and from the first minute that is exactly what we had.
The KEVI Ceilidh Band and the Nemwinster and Chantry Ceilidh Bands combined together to provide the music for dancing. We had a big turnout with the dance floor full every time with students of all ages and parents dancing together.Â
There were Solos performance spots from Scott Martin and Annie Jessop, and Alice Oakey, Sophie Lamont, Alistair McCubbin and Matthew Forster. The Pie and Pea Supper was organised by KEVI PTA, and we had the local Irish dancing group performing at the interval which has a mixture of KEVI and Middle School students. This is going to be an annual event, so watch this space!
