Book Fair 2017

30th January 2017L Dickinson

We thought last year’s magnificent total was exceptional
but we have exceeded it! At break times, the library was so full it wasn’t possible to take pictures! Our children’s enthusiasm and good humour – despite the crush – have been incomparable. We are on our way to breaking through the ÂŁ3,000 barrier, which we never dreamed was possible. What more can we say except, “THANKYOU!”

Thanks to your tremendous generosity and support, our week long annual Book Fair has, yet again, exceeded our wildest expectations with a grand total of £2,910.30! This has raised a magnificent £1,746.00 in commission, which will be spent on books and resources to stimulate literacy and a love of reading throughout school.

Google Expeditions

30th January 2017L Dickinson

On Tuesday 17th January 2017 we were fortunate enough to have take part in a Google Expedition. Every child took part in a 30 minute workshop which took them into ‘The Solar System’, through the ‘Great Barrier Reef’ or amongst the ‘Seven New Wonders of the World’ to name a few.

Google Expeditions is an app which allows users

to take part in virtual trips to various places around the world using a headset. The images are static but allow the user to view 360 degrees by simply turning their head whilst holding the device.

Staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience – click ‘continue reading’ for some quotes from pupils and videos.

Understanding Scaled Scores

13th January 2017L Dickinson

SScaled scoreATs tests are externally marked, with results being returned to schools in July. The results will be shared with parents before the end of the summer term. Although each test has a different number of questions and marks available, all of the test results have been converted to a common scale. It is this scaled score that will be reported to you. The scaled score gives an indication of how children have achieved against the nationally expected standard. A score of 100 represents the expected standard. Higher scores indicate higher achievement, while scores below 100 indicate that children have not yet met the expected standard for their age.

You will receive test scores and scaled scores for each of the tested subjects:

‱ Reading
‱ Mathematics
‱ Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

To give an indication of the range of marks, the lowest possible score is likely to be around 70 or 80, with high scores of up to about 120 or 130. Children who score at the lower end of this range are likely to need some further support to ‘catch up’ as they move into secondary school.

Along with each of the test results, you will also receive information about the teacher’s assessment of your child’s ability.

Bonjour de la France!

4th January 2017L Dickinson

collage of picsPupils in 7S were excited to receive letters from their French penpals just before the holidays. They were a most welcome early Christmas present.

“I was really happy to get my letter from Lorine as I wanted to find out all about her.  She likes dancing and playing video games so we have that in common.”  Emily Evans

“My penpal Lorie has so many pets – 3 dogs, a hamster, 11 hens and a rabbit. Wow!”  Grace Young

“I liked how Clara decorated my letter – it was really colourful and had lots of stickers on.  It looks great.”  Will Ayliffe

“I discovered that the kids in France like pretty much the same stuff as we do over here.  Axel enjoys playing on the Xbox, which I do too.”  Nathan Arkle

“Some of our penpals put little gifts in with the letters.  I got a really nice pen from CĂ©dric.  Merci beaucoup!”  Chloe Halliday

“A lot of our penpals seem to have lots of pets and very big families.  Guillaume, which is the French name William, wrote that he has 2 brothers and 7 sisters!” Antonia Willoughby

“I was very happy to receive my letter as I have had a penpal before.  Capucine seems very kind as she sent me a rubber, a loomband animal, a pen and a lipbalm.  J “  Chloe Holmes

We shall be sending some ‘Bonne AnnĂ©e / Happy New Year’ cards in the next week or so, and look forward to maintaining the link with École Ernest Millet’.

Bravo les enfants!

round 1 winnersThe first round of the French Spelling Bee took place just before the Christmas break.  Pupils in Year 7 learnt a bank of 50 French words off by heart and had to spell as many as they could using the French alphabet in one minute.

Congratulations to the seven winners who go through the second round in February. Or should we say ‘FĂ©licitations’!
