19th July 2017L Dickinson

7S received new letters from their young friends across The Channel this month.

Kitty Kilmurray: “Our French penpals recently went on a class trip to London and they sent us some photos of their sightseeing trips.  It sounded like they had great fun.”

Amy Godward: “My penpal Emma said she really enjoyed visiting all the tourist sights like Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, but that she wasn’t a big fan of English food.”

Antonia Willoughby: “I was excited to receive my letter from Guillaume because I think it’s good to learn about new cultures and I love hearing what he has to say

about himself and his family.  He had a super time on his trip to London and said it is an experience he will never forget.”

Newminster and Chantry perform The Rocky Monster Show

21st June 2017L Dickinson

On Monday 19th June and Tuesday 20th June Newminster and Chantry pupils put on The Rocky Monster Show.

This bizarre, anarchic and very funny, Rock ‘n’ Roll musical was a riotous mix of the Addams Family, Young Frankenstein and Phantom of the Opera, with Rebecca and The Rocky Horror Show thrown in for good measure!

Baron Frankenstein’s descendant, and ex-pop star turned professor of Genetics, creates DNA moulds of people in his computer. How these moulds come to life as the ultimate Rock Group, headed by a clone of Elvis himself is the highlight of the hilarious plot.

More traditional monsters also add spice to the explosive mixture. The packed out audience and cast loved the Rock ‘n’ Roll score, much of which is an affectionate send-up of the 60’s.

The whole show was done by the pupils and involved around 200 youngsters. The set was made by the Bronze Arts Award students, tickets and programmes were designed by students, lego club made props, sound and lighting crew provided wonderful special effects not to mention the singing, dancing and acting.

The production has involved many partnerships. Students from the Acting Degree at Newcastle college provided acting coaching, a sixth form KEVI student choreographed and taught the dances, KEVI staff and students have helped with the sound and lighting with many staff from both schools involved with tuition and supporting roles.

QUOTES

I have enjoyed rehearsing the show with my friends because I loved dancing and singing – Leah Clark, year 7.

The Rocky Monster Show has given me the opportunity to make new friends and given me new opportunities. We all thoroughly enjoyed being taught dance by Antonia, a sixth form student from KEVI – Tyla Miller, year 7.

The show was a wonderful mix of acting, singing, and dancing, and was really funny too – Melissa Daglish, year 7.

The costumes and set had been designed by the pupils and it was all so creative! -Charley McClellan, year 7.

I thoroughly enjoyed being part of a brilliant performance. The best part was dancing to the Time Warp, which involved some complex dance moves – Imogen Mellor, Year 6

I enjoyed being part of the performance because I learnt more about myself and challenged myself musically – Ethan Carter, Year 6

I loved being part of the show. I made lots of friends and it boosted my confidence. I love being on stage as it makes me feel happy as well as giving me butterflies – Sienna Howard, Year 6

It was superb. We were resilient in making the show the best it could be, always striving to be better. The end show was amazing after the amazing guidance of our teachers and coaches  – Kate Leja, Year 6

Simon Taylor, Executive Head teacher of the Three Rivers Trust said, “This was a wonderful show, full of fun, great tunes and fabulous dancing.  With almost 200 students involved from the cast, technical and stage crews, it highlighted the talent, energy and enthusiasm of our children and staff, and continued the great tradition of the creative and performing arts at the Three Rivers.”

Vamos al Cine

6th June 2017L Dickinson

Some of our Year 7 linguists took a trip to the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle for a Spanish film study day.  The movie was 1973’s El Espiritu de la Colmena (Spirit of the Beehive),  which looks at the lives of two young sisters after seeing the movie Frankenstein.

“It was a unique experience seeing a foreign film on the big screen.  Although it wasn’t my type of film, it was quite thought-provoking and left me wondering what happened next.”  Archie Rigby

“I really enjoyed the film.  It was completely different to what I was expecting and unlike most movies I have seen.  I understood the plot well but couldn’t decipher the hidden meanings behind the scenes.”  Lydia Fraser

“The workshops after the film were quite challenging in terms of the Spanish used.  However, one of the activities was based on describing the main characters which I could do well as we have covered this topic in class.”  Kitty Kilmurray

And now for the Spanish reviews

“Diria que ‘El Espiritu’ es bastante triste y serio.  Sin embargo, recomendaría esta película a mis amigos porque es muy fascinante.” Jack Loughnane

“Me encantan las pelĂculas apasionantes, por lo que me gusta mucho.  Yo creo que es si emocionante y encantador, pero es tambiĂ©n un poco triste.” Elisa Swalwell

“No recomendaría esta película porque pienso que no es interesante.  No me causo una buena impresión.  En otras palabras, es difícil de creer.” Sam Porteous

Lingucast Day Out at Newcastle Uni

3rd May 2017L Dickinson

20170426_144813Some of our Year 7s went to a Lingucast languages day at Newcastle University last week. The day promoted the benefits of learning a language and where they may lead you to after your school career.

“It was an amazing day and I learned so many new things – I can now greet people in quite a few different languages!” Abi Barrass

“We had a Korean taster session which I absolutely loved. Although their alphabet is completely different to ours, Helen taught us a few tricks to help remember which symbols make which sound. It was challenging but has made me interested in learning such an unusual language in the future.” Alice Hepton

Ich spreche Deutsche

28th April 2017L Dickinson

20170406_103309Our MFL department played host to Claire Brown and Grace Dodds before the Easter break. As primary teaching students at Newcastle University, they spent a few days in Chantry to see how languages are taught in our school. They then did some German taster sessions for some of our Year 6 and 7 pupils.

“Our Languages placement at Chantry was a really fun and informative experience. We were able to observe the teaching of a variety of different languages then teach our own German lessons! The children were all incredibly enthusiastic about the sessions and did extremely well – it is clear they enjoy learning different languages. I now feel more confident about teaching MFL myself, and look forward to doing so in my next placement.” Claire Brown.

Amy Sparham, Y6: “I enjoyed learning a bit of German, particularly how to greet people in different situations.”

Jay Pearson, Y7: “We currently do French and Spanish so it was great to add a third language into the mix. Sehr gut!”

Lewis Beattie, Y6: “I think knowing how to speak other languages is a really useful skill to have. I would like to go travelling when I am older and be able to talk to people in French or German.”
