World Book Day is an annual event that schools all over the country celebrate. It started 20 years ago and this year it took place on Thursday 2nd March. Schools do different things to celebrate the day such as dressing up as their favourite book characters; book themed lessons; sponsored reads and much more!
I decided to interview Miss Falkingham (Head of English) and Mrs Inverarity (School Librarian) to find out about what Chantry Middle School did to celebrate!

World Book Day must take lots of organising. How do you do it all?
Mrs Inverarity: I always ask for volunteers to help write students’ names on the free book vouchers. This year, Amy in Year 7 took on the whole job single-handed and didn’t miss out anyone! She also put the vouchers for each class into their pigeonholes so they could be given out on the first day on which they could be used. Every student got one and it’s really good because they can buy whatever book they want and get £1 off the cost!
How did you pick who won the competition? (There were lots of good costumes!)
Miss Falkingham: People who have put effort into their costume and look like the character they are supposed to be, that’s how we chose.
What is your favourite book from when you were a child?
Miss Falkingham: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Who is your favourite author?
Mrs Inverarity: My favourite is usually the one I happen to be reading at the moment, I read so many! I really like books written by Frances Hardinge, though. She was probably my favourite author in 2016.
Was there a book that you did not enjoy. If so why not?
Mrs Inverarity: I can’t think of one at the moment but obviously there have been some. In general, I don’t like books with too many characters because they can confuse the action.
What is your favourite book character?
Mrs Inverarity: I don’t have one! Actually, thinking about it, I really like the Very Hungry Caterpillar! He reminds me of my son who loves the book too!
