National Science & Engineering Competition Finals

M&S NSEChantry Year 7 students Miriam Cummins and Stephanie Shek have qualified for the National Science and Engineering Competition finals, which will be held in Birmingham in March 2016.

The girls took part in the regional heats of the competition during their recent attendance at the Big Bang North East Fair.

During the heats, which involved hundreds of students from across the North East, the girls wowed judges with their detailed work “Investigating How Well Chewing Gum Removes Plaque”.

The project work of Ronan Gascoigne and William Lister, “Testing the Effectiveness of Plant Food”, was also highly commended by the judges.
It is the second year that Chantry students have been nationally recognised for the quality of their Science investigation work. The whole school congratulates them on their hard work and success.

7H visit Piramal Healthcare

7H at PiramilStudents in 7H have been learning more about careers in the STEM sector, by visiting local pharmaceutical company Piramal Healthcare.During their afternoon visit, the students received an introductory talk about the company before visiting the Quality Control labs, trying their hand at paper chromatography and seeing how an electron microscope works.

 

Speaking after the visit, Ellie Cape in 7H said: “It was a really good experience as we got to do a range of experiments using equipment that isn’t available in school. I also enjoyed the tour of the site”.

A big thank you to Dr Paul Nott and his colleagues at Piramal for hosting the series of visits visits for all classes. 7C have already been on this visit but 7T, 7R & 7Y will visit Piramal on 2nd or 9th of July.

Big Bang Science Showcase Event

BB1Since the start of the year, twenty-one Year 7 students have been working towards the British Science Association’s Bronze CREST Award in special after-school sessions.

On 22 March, we hosted a special showcase event, for students to present their completed projects and discuss ideas with professional scientists and engineers.

BB2The standard of work was very high and we’re pleased to confirm that all of the students’ project work has been selected for exhibition at the regional Big Bang Science Fair in July.

Well done to all of the students involved and a big thank you to everyone who supported the event.

Visit Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station

 IMG_1960A group of 28 Year 8 students took part in a visit to Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station. The facility, which is owned and operated by EDF Energy, has two advanced gas-cooled reactors and can generate sufficient electricity for 3% of the UK need.

The visit began with a look around the new Visitors Centre, which included a range of hands on electricity-related activities for the students to take part in. This was followed by an introductory presentation about the history of the site and how electricity was generated there.

Chantry Young Scientists in the National Spotlight

Year 8 students Ben Waugh and Harrison Smart presented their science investigation work at the National Science and Engineering Competition finals at the NEC Birmingham.

In their investigation, the boys created a homemade toothpaste, which worked just as effectively as the leading brands but at a fraction of the cost. The boys were grilled by a panel of expert judges and were able to confidently explain the science behind their work.

Chantry Students Scoop Top Science Prize

Science 2 Two Chantry Middle School students are celebrating after winning aprestigious prize for work they exhibited at the Big Bang North East Science Fair.

Ben Waugh and Harrison Smart, who are both in Year 8, fought off competition from students across the North East to win the University of Bradford Robotic Telescope Prize for Practical Science.

Girls Go Digital North East

imageWell done to all of the year 8 girls that took part in the ‘Girls Go Digital’ event at the Sage Gateshead on Friday the 16th of January.

All girls got the chance to work with industry experts and got hands on experience with a diverse range of digital technologies.

It was a great opportunity to develop their skills and be inspired by ground-breaking women from this exciting sector.

Interactive sessions covered; App and web development, 3D printing, Forensic science and Coding

All girls got a goody bag at the end of the event. Well done to Monet Wendt who won the latest Kindle Fire HD tablet! The group she was working with won the overall prize for web development.
