On Friday 18th October, Year 8 took part in Restart a Heart Workshop with volunteers from the North East Ambulance Service.
Restart a Heart Day is a global initiative developed by the European Resuscitation Council, launched in 2013, to raise awareness of the importance of teaching members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest.
They learnt how to:
- put someone safely into the recovery position
- how to administer CPR
- and that our nearest defibrillator is at Morpeth Rugby Club
The children also learnt that over 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK every year. Currently, less than 1 in 10 survive. The earlier the patient can receive CPR and a shock from a defibrillator, the greater their chance of survival.
Ruby T said “I think the Restart a Heart Workshop was good because we got to practice CPR and share our knowledge with the rest of the class.”
Pippa S said “I liked the fact that people were able to share knowledge on what they already know about helping people in distress.”
Lucy S said “I loved the workshop because it taught us life-saving skills so that we can help people in need.”
Lilleth said “I liked the Restart a Heart Workshop because we learnt how to potentially save a life. I also liked that we could share knowledge we already had about CPR.”
