Some of our Year 7s went to a Lingucast languages day at Newcastle University last week. The day promoted the benefits of learning a language and where they may lead you to after your school career.
“It was an amazing day and I learned so many new things – I can now greet people in quite a few different languages!” Abi Barrass
“We had a Korean taster session which I absolutely loved. Although their alphabet is completely different to ours, Helen taught us a few tricks to help remember which symbols make which sound. It was challenging but has made me interested in learning such an unusual language in the future.” Alice Hepton

“As well as the Korean, we also got to learn some Dutch. It is very similar to German and they have some really unusual translations. For example. the word for gloves is ‘Handschoenen’ which actually translates as ‘Hand Shoes’!” Florence Stott
“We had a tour of the Languages Library while we were there. I didn’t realise that you could choose from 150 languages to learn there, some of which I had never heard of!” Alice Hudson
“I really enjoyed the day. It made me realise how learning a language can unlock new doors and help you make friends from so many different cultures. It was really interesting to get to speak to some of the language students there and find out about the exciting things they had been doing during their year abroad as part of their degree. It made me excited for my future.” Rebecca Watson
“My favourite part of the day was when we got to make our Lingucast presentations. We worked together in little teams and put a script together in French about some unusual characters (a carrot, a toaster and a potato) deciding where to go on holiday. We then recorded our voices and put them onto a slide show. We used some of our French that we already knew as well as learning a few new things along the way.” Will Ayliffe
Well done to all of our linguists for fully participating in the day and a special thank you to all of the Languages team at Newcastle University for a fantastic day. Merci! Kamsa-hamnida! Bedankt!
