Restart a Heart 2019

25th October 2019Mrs C Allison
On Friday 18th October, Year 8 took part in Restart a Heart Workshop with volunteers from the North East Ambulance Service.
Restart a Heart Day is a global initiative developed by the European Resuscitation Council, launched in 2013, to raise awareness of the importance of teaching members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest.
They learnt how to:
  • put someone safely into the recovery position
  • how to administer CPR
  • and that our nearest defibrillator is at Morpeth Rugby Club
The children also learnt that over 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK every year. Currently, less than 1 in 10 survive. The earlier the patient can receive CPR and a shock from a defibrillator, the greater their chance of survival.
Ruby T saidĀ “I think the Restart a Heart Workshop was good because we got to practice CPR and share our knowledge with the rest of the class.”
Pippa S saidĀ “I liked the fact that people were able to share knowledge on what they already know about helping people in distress.”
Lucy S saidĀ “I loved the workshop because it taught us life-saving skills so that we can help people in need.”
Lilleth saidĀ “I liked the Restart a Heart Workshop because we learnt how to potentially save a life. I also liked that we could share knowledge we already had about CPR.”

BINGO!

22nd October 2019Mrs C Allison

As part of our language day celebrations, we ran a competition for pupils to link a language fact to a teacher.Ā  How many of you knew Mr Ord had an A level in French or that Mr Hutch could speak German? Were you aware that Mr Shields has Portuguese relatives, Madame Brown used to live in Austria and SeƱora Said’s grandad is Arabic?Ā  Well, Hayden and Ruby in Y8 made it their mission to find out. Congrats to the pair who scored a full house of answers. They said ā€œIt was such an interesting challenge to do as we found out things we never knew about people we have known for years!ā€

Northumbria University Exploring Science Outreach

9th October 2019Mrs C Allison
STEM Ambassadors from Northumbria University spent the day at Chantry delivering Exploring Science Outreach sessions to KS2 students.
Working in small groups, students had to design and construct a motorisedĀ moonĀ rover using Technical Lego. They then programmed their rover to see how well it performed on differentĀ surfaces.
The students all had a great time and learnt all about the different forces acting on their moon rovers. They also had a chance to discuss university life with the STEM Ambassadors.
We are very grateful to the team from Northumbria University for their support and expertise during the day.
