Following on from the work on democracy covered in citizenship lessons, our Year 8s took a trip to the cinema to see ‘Suffragette’.
“The movie showed what women’s rights used to consist of a hundred years ago, which was basically very little. Before I watched the film, I didn’t realise how brutal the road was for women to get the vote and how hard the Suffragettes fought for equality.” Jacob Russan-Pritchett
“It was a very interesting film and it has made me understand the struggles of women in the past. I am very appreciative of what the Suffragettes went through to bring us things a lot of us we take very much for granted these days.” Cara Wray
“I really enjoyed the movie and think it accurately showed the sacrifices a lot of women made during that period. I think it would have been nice if the film makers had also shown the joy and celebration when women did succeed in getting the vote.” Martha Hornett
“8S did a lot of work on the Suffragettes last year but I think a lot of my class were still shocked by the treatment of women and in particular how few rights they had when it came to their children. Last year, we focussed on the contributions made by Emily Wilding Davison and at the end of the movie it showed real life footage of the parade for her funeral which I think struck a real resonance with us. It also showed the dates women across the world were given the right to vote and I had no idea that in Switzerland it was as late as 1971!” Miss Said
